POWERbreathe EX1 Series: Expiratory Muscle Training Device
PLEASE READ THE PRESSURE LEVELS OF EACH DEVICE BEFORE MAKING A CHOICE. IF UNSURE, WE SUGGEST CHOOSING THE LOWER PRESSURE DEVICE.
The POWERbreathe EX1 Series gives your breathing-out muscles a workout. While the POWERbreathe Plus IMT trains the muscles you breathe in with, the EX1 trains the muscles you breathe out with — the muscles you also use for coughing, speaking and singing.
It works like weights for your breathing. When you breathe out through the device, a spring-loaded valve pushes back against your breath, so your muscles have to work against a resistance. As you progress, you turn the dial up to increase the challenge.
The EX1 was developed with speech and language therapists around the world and is used by singers, wind musicians, athletes and people working with health professionals. It is drug-free, hand-held and easy to use at home or in a clinic.
Choosing Your Model
Every model has 11 resistance levels (0–10). The difference between models is the resistance range — how easy the lowest level is, how hard the top level is, and how big each step up is.
Medic — for clinical and rehab use
- Who it's for: People with weaker muscles, people recovering under the care of a health professional, and older adults. This is the model health professionals usually recommend for their patients.
- Resistance range: 10–80 cmH₂O, going up in steps of 7 cmH₂O.
- A gentle range with small, even steps, so training can build up gradually.
Light Resistance — for beginners and everyday use
- Who it's for: Beginners, people new to breathing training, and performers building voice and breath control. Suitable for most people.
- Resistance range: 10–80 cmH₂O, going up in steps of 7 cmH₂O.
- We recommend the Light model if you're unsure — it covers the range most people train in.
Medium Resistance — for active, experienced users
- Who it's for: People with breathing-training experience, amateur athletes, and singers or wind musicians wanting a bigger challenge.
- Resistance range: 35–175 cmH₂O, going up in steps of 14 cmH₂O.
- Starts noticeably harder than the Light model, so it suits people who are already training regularly.
Heavy Resistance — for advanced users only
- Who it's for: The small number of advanced users with large lung volumes who have reached the top level of a Medium device.
- Resistance range: 55–220 cmH₂O, going up in steps of 16–17 cmH₂O.
- Don't start here. The jumps between levels are much bigger, and the maker advises that starting too heavy can affect your breathing technique and limit your progress.
About Expiratory Muscle Training (EMT)
Expiratory Muscle Training (EMT) is a way of exercising the muscles you breathe out with, using a set resistance — like resistance training for any other muscle group. Breathing out is usually passive, but when you exercise hard, cough, sing or play a wind instrument, your breathing-out muscles do real work. EMT lets you train those muscles on their own. Speak to your doctor, physio or speech therapist about whether EMT is right for you.
Recommended Use
Suggested training sessions is a simple 5 × 5 × 5 routine: 5 strong breaths out, 5 times a day (25 in total), 5 days a week, with about a minute's rest between sets. Breathe in fully, then breathe out through the device as fast and forcefully as you can. After 5 days, check your level — you may be ready to turn the dial up.
Product Features
- Consistent resistance: A calibrated spring valve gives you the same measured resistance on every breath out — the same pressure threshold method used across the POWERbreathe range.
- 11 resistance levels: Turn the dial up as you progress, with a clear level indicator on the handle so you can track where you're at.
- Comfortable design: Lightweight, ergonomic shape based on the POWERbreathe Plus, with a soft mouthpiece.
- Widest range on the market: Four models covering the largest spread of resistance loads of any EMT device.
- App compatible: Add the POWERbreathe Smart Adaptor to see your training live in the ActiBreathe® app, including breathing-strength tests.
- Fully disassembles: The EX1 comes apart completely for a thorough clean — important for a device you breathe out through.
- TGA registered: Class 1 medical device.
